The Task Rehearsal Method of Life-Long Learning: Overcoming Impoverished Data
نویسندگان
چکیده
The task rehearsal method (TRM) is introduced as an approach to life-long learning that uses the representation of previously learned tasks as a source of inductive bias. This inductive bias enables TRM to generate more accurate hypotheses for new tasks that have small sets of training examples. TRM has a knowledge retention phase during which the neural network representation of a successfully learned task is stored in a domain knowledge database, and a knowledge recall and learning phase during which virtual examples of stored tasks are generated from the domain knowledge. The virtual examples are rehearsed as secondary tasks in parallel with the learning of a new (primary) task using the ηMTL neural network algorithm, a variant of multiple task learning (MTL). The results of experiments on three domains show that TRM is effective in retaining task knowledge in a representational form and transferring that knowledge in the form of virtual examples. TRM with ηMTL is shown to develop more accurate hypotheses for tasks that suffer from impoverished training sets.

The Consolidation of Neural Network Task Knowledge
A fundamental question of any life-long learning system is addressed: How can task knowledge be consolidated within a long-term domain knowledge structure for efficient storage and for more efficient and effective transfer of that knowledge when learning a new task. متن کاملThe Task Rehearsal Method of Sequential Learning
An hypothesis of functional transfer of task knowledge is presented that requires the development of a measure of task relatedness and a method of sequential learning. The task rehearsal method (TRM) is introduced to address the issues of sequential learning, namely retention and transfer of knowledge. TRM is a knowledge based inductive learning system that uses functional domain knowledge as a...
متن کاملLife-long Learning Through Task Rehearsal and Selective Knowledge Transfer
The majority of machine learning research has focused on the single task learning (STL) approach where an hypothesis for a single task is induced from a set of supervised training examples. In contrast, one of the key aspects of human learning is that individuals face a sequence of learning problems over a lifetime. Humans take advantage of this by transferring knowledge from previously learned...

Introduction: Lifelong learning is a process in which individuals develop their knowledge, skills, and interest through learning opportunities in their life. This paper aimed to determine the required competencies for training medical students to acquire lifelong learning. Methods: In this qualitative study, purposeful sampling method and open-ended semi-structured interview were employed for ...
متن کاملEffects of cognitive functions on feedback request strategy and learning of a perceptual motor task
Taking individuals' cognitive abilities into consideration can play an important role in the initial stages of learning motor skills. So, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of cognitive functions on feedback request strategy and learning of a perceptual motor task. A number of 60 university male students with a mean age of 22/4 years (SD = 1/99) were selected through...
